U.S. Representative John Lewis Speaks at Life

U.S. Representative John Lewis (D-Georgia), a prominent civil rights leader since the 1960s, spoke to a standing-room only crowd at Life College April 6.

A member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Lewis also serves as chief deputy majority whip of the House and is representing Georgia's Fifth Congressional District in his fourth term. Rep. Lewis assured the students that he would advise President Clinton, the first lady, the vice president, and the subcommittee on health about the importance of chiropractic care. "I'm going to do what I can as a member of the leadership of the House to see that your profession is included in the new health bill," he said.

Recognized in 1963 as one of the "Big Six" leaders of the civil rights movement that included Martin Luther King Jr., Whitney Young, James Farmer, A. Phillip Randolph, and Roy Wilkins, Rep. Lewis has followed Dr. King's example of civil rights via nonviolent methods. He has braved 40 arrests, numerous physical attacks, and serious injuries.

Life President Dr. Sid Williams invited Rep. Lewis to return to the college and speak again, saying, "I have long been an admirer of Congressman Lewis for his courage, perseverance, and political acumen."
