Hydrotherapy: A Powerful Healing Tool

Water is the most essential nutrient for the human body. Adults are composed of approximately 60 to 65 percent water, with somewhat less in elderly and much more in infants. It is not surprising that the therapeutic application of water in any of its many forms is enjoyed throughout the world.

Hydrotherapy is almost as old as the hills from which the water runs. In fact, it has been historically accounted in a number of ancient civilizations, including Russian, Turkish, Chinese, Greek and Native American. Although it serves as a safe, effective and inexpensive treatment, hydrotherapy in modern times is often overlooked as a powerful healing tool.

Escaping the Ergonomic Danger Zone

More than 90 percent of all office workers use a personal computer, but whether they use it correctly is debatable. By "correctly," we are not referring to whether they know how to download files, format documents, troubleshoot error messages or prevent e-mail viruses from attacking. Having your computer monitor, keyboard, chair and workspace organized in a way that promotes productive, pain-free work and discourages repetitive-stress and ergonomic-related injuries is more important than you may realize.

In 1997, work-related musculoskeletal disorders had reached 275,000 cases annually. In 2009, that number is expected to exceed 14 million. Musculoskeletal disorders related to computer use include neck pain, tension headaches, lower back pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. The affect on the economy is devastating, accounting for an estimated $20 billion in direct costs and more than $100 billion in indirect costs every year.

Research Goldmines at Your Fingertips

Medical information can be complex so it's important to find sources that give an accurate and well-defined explanation without being confusing. It's also nice to find information that you can print and share.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the primary federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research. Helping to lead the way toward important medical discoveries that improve people's health and save lives, NIH scientists investigate ways to prevent disease as well as the causes, treatments, and even cures for common and rare diseases.

Composed of 27 institutes and centers, the NIH provides leadership and financial support to researchers in every state and throughout the world. Funded by Congress, the NIH offers information free to the public and to researchers. In fact, if the researchers use federal funds from NIH, they must make their manuscripts available through PubMed Central, a service of the National Library of Medicine.

Here, you will find an absolute goldmine of viable information at your fingertips. However, to navigate through the volumes of information, a little understanding of how the departments make their information available is necessary.
