Don't Forget the Ginger

By Editorial Staff

Ginger is commonly known for helping calm a restless stomach, among other benefits, but it also may play an important role in reducing inflammation in people suffering from autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

According to new research, ginger supplementation appears to influence a type of white blood cell called neutrophils, making them more resistant to "neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation." Known as "NETosis," this process promotes inflammation and may contribute to / worsen autoimmune diseases. In the study, healthy subjects who took a ginger supplement for one week boosted a specific chemical inside neutrophils, which inhibited NETosis. Study findings appear in the research journal JCI Insight.
